Adriaan Geuze invited to select winning proposal for Tverskaya Streetscape International Competition
02-06-2016
West 8’s Adriaan Geuze is invited to join the jury committee for the international open concept design competition to transform the streetscape of Tverskoy District in Central Moscow.
Tverskaya is Moscow’s signature street. Broadened and virtually built anew in the 1930s-50s, this major thoroughfare brings together dramatic neo-classicist palaces, and Stalinist Empire style stores and restaurants in the center of the city. The Tverskoy District is the Central Administrative Okrug of Moscow, stretching from Pushkinskaya Square to Triumfalnaya Square it extends for 1.51 km and covers an area of 6.17 hectares.
To ensure a design proposal is developed that meets the highest standards of public space, and also respects the historical identity of Moscow’s main street, the Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design, has organised an Open International Concept Design Competition for the Tverskaya Streetscape. Landscape architects and architects from Russia, and around the world can submit proposals until 27 June 2016.
The project site does not encompass Tverskaya Street in its entirety but is focussed on the section from Pushkinskaya to Triumfalnaya square as well as 1-ya Tverskaya-Yamskaya street. The streetscape design from Mokhovaya Street to Pushkinskaya Square is currently being developed by West 8.
However, the character of the two sections differs substantially. The competition area from Boulevard ring to Garden ring is mostly used by locals and office workers while the site designed by West 8 is mostly tourist oriented. According to the brief: “Competition design proposals shall reflect the identity of both Tverskaya street sections as one of the oldest and most central streets of Moscow and to take into account planned development of the surrounding area.”
Adriaan Geuze will join the jury committee which includes a number of prominent Moscow City delegates, renowned local and international architects, scholars and experts. Together the Jury panel will select the best proposal to be further developed. Announcement of results is scheduled for the 7th of July 2016. Confirmed jury members include:
