West 8 Urban Design and Landscape Architecture

BIG, West 8 and Atelier Ten, have unveiled a 28 acre master plan for Pittsburgh’s Lower Hill District. The design seeks to provide accessibility across Pittsburgh’s unique topography, creating a vibrant open space for the city’s residents to enjoy.

A team comprised of Calvin, Giordano & Associates (CGA) and West 8 have been top-ranked for design services for the North Shore Open Space Park in the City of Miami Beach. Together, CGA and West 8 will further develop the Vision Plan originally conceived by West 8 into a reality. 

Schipper Bosch, developer of the Kleefse Waard Industrial Park (IPKW) in Arnhem, wins the 2015 Gouden Piramide Award. West 8 working in collaboration with IPKW and the Municipality Arnhem was responsible for the urban design and master plan of the area. 

West 8 working together with Sweco, Gilles Sensini, Les éclaireurs and Cuesta has been awarded the commission for the design and realization of Park Moulon and Carré des Sciences, a four hectare public space project that is part of the development of the Paris-Saclay urban campus.

Harvard awards the 12th Veronica Rudge Green Prize in Urban Design to Madrid Río, designed by Burgos & Garrido, Porras & La Casta, Rubio & Álvarez-Sala, and West 8. According to the Jury "The professional and pedagogical value of Madrid Río is that it makes evident the diversity of economic, technical, political, logistical, and cultural challenges that its designers have surmounted.”

On October 12th, Noordwaard was officially opened. Since 2010, the Rijkswaterstaat has restructured the 4.450 ha polder to return it to nature and allow space for the safe discharge of high water levels. West 8 and IPV Delft have designed 33 bridges and 12 water pumping stations in this polder landscape which offer new opportunities for recreation.

On Sunday October 25th, West 8 was awarded the RTV Utrecht Public Prize for the design of the Park Pergola in the Máximapark. Public involvement and respect for the Park pergola and Máximapark is a key part of what has made it so successful.

The recently opened Queens Quay Revitalization project in Toronto has been awarded a prestigious Brownie Award by The Canadian Urban Institute (CUI). The project picked up the Best Overall Project on the Neighbourhood Scale at this year’s award ceremony. 

Mesa city center wins an honor award in the urban design category at the 2015 Arizona AIA design awards. The jury commented that the project "creates a desirable “there” factor, and is a magnet for various scales of engagement and civic activity."

On the 9th of October 2015, the City of Leuven celebrated the official opening of Engels Plein. West 8's winning design for the square transforms what was once an urban leftover into a strikingly green pedestrian and vehicular corridor, complete with custom detailing.

On Thursday the 8th of October, the National Waterline Museum opened its doors to the public. Mariëtte Pennarts, the cultural ambassador for the province of Utrecht said that the new museum and landscape design at the Fort bij Vechten "is an important, cultural highlight for 2015."

On the 30th of July the Mayor of Cali, Mr. Rodrigo Guerrero Velasco planted a yellow Guayacan tree on the banks of the River Cali. The official tree planting ceremondy kicks off construction on the first phase of the Río Cali Park in Colombia.

The Friends of Máximapark, Councilor Kees Geldof, and local volunteers harvested the first hops crop from the Máximapark pergola on Saturday the 26th of September. Mr Geldof, who planted the hops plants in spring 2015, took down the first cones.

The opening of The Nurturing House by Next City Living Lab marks the 5th consecutive year of The Netherlands’ participation in the Beijing Design Week.  Organised by ROAM foundation, the pavilion aims to stimulate innovation and creativity for a better urban future in China. West 8 is invited to partake in the event and presents an exhibition entitled ‘Sensitive Landscape’.  

Adriaan Geuze presents at the sell out "Botanical Beginnings" event, on the 28th of September in Houston, which raised over US$400,000 for the new Houston Botanic Garden, currently being designed by West 8.

On the 22nd of September The Trust for Governors Island and West 8’s Adriaan Geuze led an exclusive preview of the views from the top of Outlook Hill, 70 feet above New York Harbor. The event was followed by a public preview weekend on the 26 and 27 of September, that saw 2000 visitors experience the Hills construction site for the first time ever.

On Friday, September 18th the Minister of Infrastructure and Environment opened the new residence of the KWR Watercycle Research Institute in Nieuwegein, the Netherlands. West 8 was responsible for the garden design that connects the open and transparent office building by Cepezed to its surroundings.

On Thursday the 3rd of September, Councilman Adriaan Visser and West 8’s Adriaan Geuze unveiled the redesign of the 1km long Coolsingel at an official press conference. The revitalized boulevard will create an alluring green, spacious boulevard and new heart for downtown Rotterdam.

West 8 Design Director, Adriaan Geuze will open the 12th of edition of the Dutch National Congress on Public Space (Landelijk Congres Openbare Ruimte) in Schiedam on 19 November, 2015.  Now in its 12th year, this annual event is organized for all professionals engaged in the design, establishment and management of public space in the Netherlands.
