West 8 Urban Design and Landscape Architecture

Utrecht's Máximapark Park Pergola is one of the three nominees in the Structural Design category for the 2013 Dutch Concrete Prize and is also one of the three nominees in the Best Exterior category for the 2013 Dutch Design Award.

Construction begins on the new KWR Watercycle Research Institute building this winter. The new landscape design by West 8, is in harmony with the innovative sustainable architecture designed by cepezed, and will reduce the volume of grey water released into the sewer system by 60%, putting the primary research goal of KWR Watercycle Research Institute into practice.

On Friday, 13th September, 1:15-3:00 pm Prof. Geuze will be joining a panel to discuss "The Landscape of Infrastructure" with Guy Nordenson, Carlos Eduardo Comas and Keller Easterling at MoMA, NYC. 

Journalist Noël van Bemmel recently traveled to Madrid to take a look at West 8's signature project, Madrid Rio. He believes Madrid RIO sets a bold new precedent for urban design that prioritizes quality public space over intense commercial development. 

West 8 is privileged to have the opportunity to work on the site of the former Commonwealth Institute in Kensington, London.  The project consists of an enabling development of residential buildings, which will allow for the renovations to the Grade 2 Heritage listed Parabola Building, soon to become the new home of the British Design Museum. The garden will be named as 'Holland Green Garden'.

The Provenierstunnel, another part of the extensive Rotterdam Centraal project by TEAM CS (a cooperation of Benthem Crouwel Architects, MVSA Meyer en Van Schooten Architecten and West 8), is publicly accessible again for pedestrians and cyclists going from Rotterdam North to the city centre and vice versa. 

On Monday, August 26th, the Central Station's new 40m x 4.5m high LCD screen was officialy opened. Designed by TEAM CS, the screen will broadcast footage of the Rotterdam harbor, Europes largest port, and aims to reconnect the city, its people and its visitors with the city's lively harbor.

On the 23rd of August, Christoph Elsässer, Project Manager at West 8 spoke about 'Lodging with Foresight' at the IBA Hamburg symposium on pioneering housing projects of the 21st Century.

After impressively braving Superstorm Sandy on October 22nd 2012, Governors island has earned itself a spot as one of the Sandy Success Stories.

HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan announced on the 8th of August that the WXY+West 8 Team is one of 10 international teams selected from a pool 148 teams from across 15 countries, to participate in Stages 2 and 3 of "Rebuild by Design", a multi-stage design competition tasked with promoting resilience for the Sandy-affected region. Donovan announced that he had "never seen a collection of interdisciplinary talent like that represented by the (selected) teams."  

In July 2013, The Profile on West 8 is went live on the DutchDFA: Dutch Profiles website. The interview features Adriaan Geuze discussing West 8's design and its deep relationship to the water. The film crew took a special trip to our Madrid RIO project earlier this year, and their footage reveals vivid pictures of the project in it current and fully realized state.

The Hills, the second phase of public space designed by West 8, will rise up to 80 feet above Governors Island, providing extraordinary views of Statue of Liberty and New York Harbor and opening to public in 2015.

The Park Pergola at Máximapark has been chosen as a finalist by the selection committee for the Dutch Design Awards (DDA) in the subcategory, Spatial Design. The DDA committee 2013, selected West 8's Park Pergola project from over 650 entries.

On the 7th of July Adriaan Geuze presented a lecture titled "Creating People Parks" to over 300 people at the Samsung Conference Hall in Seoul. The lecture commences the 2013 Samsung Everland Design lecture series.

West 8 in collaboration with Montpellier architects, Boyer-Percheron-Assus and Merlin, is the winner of the urban design competition for the conversion of the former School of Infantry site (EAI) (35 ha) in the city of Montpellier. Team West 8’s envisions a sustainable neighborhood, with diverse architecture and an environmentally enhanced park.

On 5th of July, Queen Máxima officially opened the park which is named after her in the Utrecht neighbourhood, Leidsche Rijn. Amid great public and media interest the Queen revealed a seating element imprinted with the name Máximapark.

The combined Belgian and Dutch design team, consisting of NU architectuuratelier - dJGA - AR-TE - WEST 8 - STABO - DAIDALOS, has been selected to design the new hospital AZ Jan Portaels in Vilvoorde, Belgium. The team was selected from thirty competing design teams.

The transformation of Queens Quay into Queens Quay Boulevard has begun, with the installation of the first granite curbs and red granite cobbles.

On 18th June 2013 West 8 was announced as the winner of the design competition for Veddel North, a riverside community which lies on the south bank of the Elbe River in Hamburg, Germany.
